“This is the harsh reality for poor people in Columbia County. There is a double standard in this country, and the CCBF is trying to level the playing field.”

WE'RE WORKING TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD
Posting Bail for Columbia County
WHO WE ARE
The Columbia County Bail Fund (CCBF) is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization providing bail funds for defendants in New York's Columbia County who are unable to post bail.
WHAT WE DO
The CCBF bails out defendants charged with one or more misdemeanors. We post cash bail only, in an amount no greater than $2,000 for a defendant who is financially unable to post bail.
GET THE FACTS
The likelihoods of a Black and Latino person being detained awaiting trial for a drug offense are 96% and 150% higher than a similarly situated white person.
Pretrial detention can pressure individuals to plead guilty (even when they are not) to obtain release, while diminishing their leverage to negotiate and undermining their right to a fair and speedy trial.
People detained awaiting trail are less likely to have their charges reduced, more likely to be sentenced to jail, and more likely to receive longer sentences than similarly situated people who were released pretrial.
People detained before trial are more likely to commit new crimes after their release, partially due to the stress incarceration places on a person's job, housing, and family connections.
More than 3 out of 5 people who are in jail are held there before a trial, when they are presumed innocent. Most are there for low-level charges, but they can't afford to pay bail as low as $500.
Out of the ten counties nationwide with the highest pretrial detention rate, seven of them are in rural areas.
